What Really Happened:
Only through a combination of the most plausible theories can we fill all the holes in each individual approach
The most rational theories are the natural causes and military testing, but each have their own individual holes. If there was an avalanche or the Karman Vortex Street, how do you explain the scrap metal, radiation, and strange glowing lights seen that night from fellow hikers? Military testing would explain all the loopholes but then create their own such as why the hikers received strange injuries.
The key distinction for this new theory is that the hikers believed there was an avalanche, when in reality there was not or it hit after they had fled. The high infrasound and Karman Vortex Street disorients people and, as seasoned hikers who most likely knew that their campsite was in a dangerous location, most likely were already paranoid about the fact that they might suddenly fall victim to the snow. The noises might have sounded like an incoming avalanche or at least scared them enough to take action, and they hurriedly cut themselves out of the tent and ran. A little ways away, they made a fire to keep warm and climbed some trees to try and determine what actually happened; thus explaining the broken branches. A few tried to make their way back and, as the evidence showed, perished on their journey. The remaining members head towards the woods and fall into a ravine and either die from the fall or later from hypothermia. Now all the strange injuries are explained; the only rational theory as to the missing tongue is that Dubinina died with her mouth open and a scavenger took it.
As far as military testing goes, the strange lights seen by other groups could have quite possibly been jets flying around and causing the noise that sounded so much like an impending avalanche and driving the hikers to leave the warmth of their tent; also the scrap metal that ruins every other theory would finally make sense. Basically, yes there was testing happening, but the government did not brutally murder the witnesses, they just scared them into thinking something else was happening.
This theory seems to incorporate all seemingly unconnected aspects of the mystery with completely rational explanations and no major loopholes. However, it is only a theory and, unfortunately, nothing will every be proven. The events of the Dyatlov Pass Mystery will forever remain unknown.
